Innovate Edmonton collaborates to create the best possible environment for technology innovation and tech-enabled startup and scaleup company growth in Edmonton.

This involves delivering programs that support the creation of new tech-enabled businesses, the acceleration and scale of high potentials and the engagement of our community.

Startup Edmonton

Startup Edmonton supports early-stage companies through mentorship and programs, access to talent and capital and by fostering a thriving community in its 14,000-square-foot home in the historic Mercer Warehouse. Since 2009, it has brought together entrepreneurs, developers, students, founders and investors to transform ideas into some of Canada’s most exciting and successful startup and scaling companies.


This flagship program grew by 32 per cent, helping more entrepreneurs validate, build and launch tech-enabled companies.

Student programming

Startup Edmonton engaged with more than 5,000 students – whether building a project at a hackathon, meeting potential startup and scaleup employers or accessing support to launch their own companies.

More than 250 students attended the Student Developer Conference.

Launch Party 9

Launch Party offers the opportunity to meet the city’s brightest entrepreneurs, try their products, and celebrate everything that the Edmonton startup community has to offer. Launch Party is a flagship event of Edmonton Startup Week and showcases the hottest startups in town.

Attendance grew by 19 per cent over 2017 with more than 800 business and innovation community members joining the celebration and supporting our launch companies.

Edmonton Research Park

The Edmonton Research Park (ERP) is home to more than 1,500 members at more than 55 companies working in diverse fields, from biotechnology to energy.

Programs and services
  • Throughout the year, ERP hosted several workshops and events that reached more than 1,500 participants.
  • The ERP lots were 100 per cent under contract to tenants by the end of the year.

Advanced Technology Centre

The Advanced Technology Centre (ATC), located in the Edmonton Research Park, is a supportive business incubator for growth-stage technology companies in Edmonton, managed by Innovate Edmonton. Throughout the year, ATC hosted several workshops and events that reached more than 1,500 participants.

  • IMBiotechnologies launched an innovative product that could revolutionize prostate cancer treatment for men around the world.
  • Metabolomic Technologies’ revolutionary made-in-Alberta solution for the prevention and early detection of colorectal cancer has stepped closer to mass adoption.
  • Umay Care, which makes a medical device that resets the effects of screen time using thermal meditation, received international news coverage after launching at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show.

TEC Edmonton

TEC Edmonton is a joint venture partnership between EEDC and the University of Alberta focused on helping technology companies successfully scale up and managing the commercialization of University of Alberta technologies.

Accelerator programs

TEC Centre Labs officially opened in 2018, featuring 8,000 square feet of newly constructed wet lab, collaboration and office space in Edmonton’s innovation corridor.

Companies created

In 2018, a record number of 11 spinoff companies were created out of University of Alberta research, bringing the total number of new spinoff companies to nearly 40 over the last seven years.

The Edmonton Innovation Ecosystem Community

The Edmonton Innovation Ecosystem Community (EIEC) is a collective of people, organizations and places that are deeply connected and networked in the pursuit of ideas that create economic opportunities. Fostered by Innovate Edmonton, the EIEC is committed to actively creating the best possible environment for technology, innovation and entrepreneurship.


We hosted six community meetings in 2018 to convene stakeholders from across the innovation ecosystem in Edmonton and build collective strategies.

EIEC benchmarks

Working with Startup Genome to perform a 2018 ecosystem assessment, we benchmarked the health of Edmonton’s innovation ecosystem against other startup cities around the world. These metrics will guide future growth targets and development opportunities for Edmonton’s technology innovation economy.

Edmonton Made

Edmonton Made enhances the exposure of locally based businesses to make it easy to shop local and find distinctly Edmonton products and experiences. Launched in 2016, Edmonton Made helps local entrepreneurs tell their stories and grow their audiences, and connects them with the resources they need to be successful.

Business engagement

Two hundred and twenty new businesses registered with Edmonton Made in 2018, bringing our total registrations to more than 800 and representing 37 per cent growth over 2017.

Gifted catalogue

Gifted, the annual product catalogue, featured 84 local businesses – double the number featured in 2017 – helping to market and promote more local businesses to shoppers around the world.

Make Something Edmonton

Make Something Edmonton is an award-winning open project platform for engaged citizens. Make SomethingEdmonton was once again awarded a Place Marketing Award at the Place Marketing Forum in Strasbourg, France.
